Certificate, Diploma and Post-Graduate Diploma Programmes in Islamic Studies and Interfaith Relations

HMI's academic courses are designed to encourage and assist scholars in building bridges of understanding between Christians, Muslims, Hindus and people of other faiths. This is reflected in the syllabi of the different courses as well as in all its other activities.

The Post-Graduate Diploma course is a nine-month program designed for those who seek a deeper knowledge of Islam and interfaith relations. This program is open to students from all religious and ideological backgrounds and has the objective of preparing them for interaction within a multi-faith society. Students are not assumed to have any significant previous background in Islam.

This programme of study can also serve as a preparation for students who wish to enroll in the Master of Theology - Islam degree under the Senate of Serampore. It also prepares pastors to engage meaningfully in the pastoral life of the church in the context of the pluralistic Indian society.

During each term the students will go on several field trips to Islamic sites in Hyderabad. Grades will be based on term papers, exams, class participation and other assignments.

Any student who meets the basic standards for admission is welcome to enroll in any of the courses without committing to the full programme. Thus one can take any combination of courses, such as only Arabic or only the Introduction to Islam course. Such non-degree students may enroll for any term and take any course; there are no prerequisites. All levels of the language classes are offered each term.

Those students, however, who wish to receive the Post-Graduate Diploma must fulfill the entire programme. Such students are expected to enroll full time, although part-time study extending over more than three terms leading to the Post-Graduate Diploma can be arranged.

Students who satisfy the requirements of a 3-month term will be eligible for a certificate. When they complete the requirements of two terms (6 months) they will be eligible for a diploma, and when they complete the requirements of all three terms (9 months) they will be eligible for a Post-Graduate Diploma.

All courses, other than the language courses, are taught in English.
