COLLABORATION AND ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT HMI has entered into collaborative agreements with other seminaries and universities both in India and overseas in order to develop HMI as a centre of excellence for theological education and training in the field of Islamic studies and interfaith relations. Those agreements have considerably broadened the scope and quality of the educational programmes and the range of students and faculty members. The collaboration is on two levels - the exchange of students and the exchange of faculty. A. Luther Seminary Luther Seminary in the United States is one of the largest theological institutions in the world with a strong programme in graduate studies. Luther Seminary added Islamic Studies to its curriculum in 1994. HMI has entered into a cooperative institutional arrangement with Luther Seminary to help broaden scholarly resources and the scope of the potential student experience. B. Frije University, The Netherlands Under this arrangement, students from the Frije University study at HMI, as part of the Master's in Theology or Master of Arts with a specialisation in Islamic studies. This partnership commenced in 1996, and so far two students from Frije University have taken courses at HMI and one faculty member from HMI has taught at the University. Two HMI faculty members are presently enrolled in a collaborative Ph.D programme. C. Other There are many other categories of students/research scholars in Islamic Studies at Master's and Doctoral level. These scholars spend varying periods of time attending courses or conducting library reference work, working at the local archives, monuments and related topics. The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute sponsors Canadian scholars who conduct research at HMI, while the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America sponsors students both from eastern and western countries. Attempts are underway to establish exchange programmes with universities and institutes in Britain and Germany.
